چکیده

Astrocytes are glial cells that play a crucial role in providing a supportive environment for neurons, mainly by cellcell interactions mediating numerous physiological and biochemical functions in the central nervous system (CNS). Astrocytes are also critical for intercellular signaling in the neurovascular unit. Although numerous reports have detailed the complex effects of astrocytes upon neurons in neurodegenerative disease, whether or not astrocytes act as initiators or contributors in the pathogenesis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) remains unclear. A broad overview of astrocytes’ link to motor neuron degeneration in ALS, as well as specific functions of astrocytes within the neurovascular unit is presented. This review summarizes current knowledge of the astrocyte’s role in disease pathogenesis and discusses the potential of the astrocyte as a target for future ALS therapies.

Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a relatively rare disease that can be associated with various mental, physical and psychological burdens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions based on positive psychology on post-traumatic growth, self-compassion and quality of life in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Methods: This descriptive-...

An Iranian familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis pedigree with p.Val48Phe causing mutation in SOD1: a genetic and clinical report

Objective(s): Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder, is the most common motor neuron disease in European populations. Approximately 10% of ALS cases are familial (FALS) and the other patients are considered as sporadic ALS (SALS). Among many ALS causing genes that have been identified, mutations in SOD1 and C9orf72 are the most common genetic causes...

Microglia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disorder that results in the selective death of motor neurons in the central nervous system. This progressive motor neuron degeneration leads to death of the patient on average three to five years after onset of the disease. To date, no therapy is available. Many hypotheses have been formulated to explain the selective degeneration of motor n...
